Citrus canker

Localizing focuses:
Fundecitrus uses statistics as a tool to detect focuses of citrus canker. Since 1999, it performs sampling surveys that point to the incidence of the disease, as well as the regions where the focus are located.

Based on the results of the surveys, scanning is programmed. Scanning consists of inspections on all citrus plants located in all properties of the rural area, both commercial and non-commercial. The process is completed with inspections on plants of the urban zone. Nurseries are inspected every other month.

Focus elimination:
Fundecitrus maintains specific teams to monitor properties with contaminated plants.

The whole eradication process is carried out in accordance with the Plant Sanitation Defense Regulation, approved by Federal Decree no. 24114, of April 12, 1934, complemented by Ministerial Directive no. 291, of July 23, 1997 and Resolutions no. 01, of March 20, 2000 and no.3 of October 31, 2000 of the Executive Commission of the State of Sao Paulo of CANECC - National Campaign for the Eradication of Citrus Canker.

Plants remaining in the contaminated properties are inspected at variable intervals between 30 and 90 days, according with the conditions of the planting fields - contaminated, neighboring infected plantations or other. The quarantine is suspended after two years without any presence of symptomatic plants.

Fundecitrus is responsible for plant inspections only, and the Department of Agriculture of the State of Sao Paulo collects the suspected materials, sends it to the laboratory, performs property interdiction and subsequently the eradication when the laboratory confirms the presence of the disease. However, it is quite common that the Department of Agriculture, based on the agreement signed, requests Fundecitrus' assistance in those tasks, and the Department provides funds or labor.

Citrus variegated chlorosis (CVC)

The Technical Department's work is aimed at sampling surveys that occur in the months prior to harvesting. Agronomists and agricultural technicians inspect approximately 1,500 plants of the Pera, Natal, Valencia and Hamlin varieties, divided in the north, northwest, center and south regions and in four different age groups.

Actions to guide in managing the disease and support to researches complete the procedures connected to citrus variegated chlorosis.

Monitoring sharpshooters

Fieldwork consists in installing and reading the yellow adesive traps used to capture sharpshooters.

The data are transferred to the Scientific Department who performe studies related to the mechanism of acquisition and transmission of the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium that causes CVC and determines the population flow of the pest in different regions of the State.

Citrus sudden death (CSD)

With the emergence of the disease, it became a relevant field of action for the Technical Department. Frequent surveys are carried out to determine the occurrence and location of the cases of CSD. The technical directions on the matter are provided during lectures, training programs and visits.

Studies concerning CSD occurrence and distribution were performed by Fundecitrus or by Fundecitrus in partnerships with other institutions.
